Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, can alter the size, shape, and definition of a person’s nose to create a balanced facial appearance. Patients often look into nose surgery to correct a large, misshapen, or asymmetrical nose. Others may have breathing difficulties that need to be addressed. Regardless of your reason to undergo rhinoplasty, there are some factors to consider before scheduling your procedure. Below, Dr. Rey has provided some helpful information that will help determine if rhinoplasty is the right surgical procedure for you.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty can enhance the appearance of a person’s face by reshaping and resizing the nose to produce facial harmony. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and can take a few hours to complete, depending on the amount of correction needed. At the time of your procedure, an incision is placed along the treated area and the skin and tissue that cover the nose are gently pulled back. Dr. Rey then reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage. After your nose is sculpted to the desired size and shape, the skin and tissue are redraped, and the incisions are closed.
What Type of Nose Surgery Do I Need?
Whether you are struggling with nasal deformities like bumps on the top of your nose or wide nostrils, rhinoplasty can boost your self-esteem and help you achieve the look you desire. However, the technique used during your surgery can have a significant impact on your final results.
Open Rhinoplasty
For patients who need open rhinoplasty, an incision will be made across the columella, which is located between the nostrils on the base of the nose. This technique allows Dr. Rey to access the underlying structure of the bone. Open rhinoplasty will result in some minor scarring but this will fade over time.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty will require incisions to be placed inside the nostrils and scars are hidden within the nose. Although closed rhinoplasty has a shorter recovery time than open rhinoplasty, this technique does not give Dr. Rey as much access to the underlying structure of your nose.
Septoplasty
Patients struggling with snoring or other breathing difficulties due to a crooked nose can undergo septoplasty. Septoplasty can treat a blocked nasal passage due to a deviated septum by straightening the nose and reshaping cartilage to improve your breathing.
